Welwyn Sports & Social club is run by a voluntary Committee and voluntary bar staff who give up their time to provide a friendly club with excellent facilities. The club was originally formed when Welwyn village had its own Cricket and Football team and moved to its current home in 1976.
The club was originally built by volunteers and the original members were celebrated at the club’s 40th Anniversary dinner in 2016, a new honours board with the individual names of the original members takes pride of place in the main hall.
After a number of years in decline of membership, a new committee was formed in 2015 with a view to updating an improving the club for the local community. The first stage was to attract more members. The membership in 2015 was just under 300, today they have just under 800.
The Club have done this by attracting families into the club with a monthly family disco, regular Comedy nights and Tribute Acts and Events.
With an improving membership base, it was decided to update the club from its dated 1980s décor. The first of this work was carried out in August 2019 with the Main Hall having a refurbishment with new flooring, seating, lighting and decor.
In early 2020, after gaining planning permission to extend The Club, the members at the annual AGM unanimously agreed to extend the club premises. The funding from this work was taken from the clubs reserves and additional fund raising by the membership The works were due to start in the summer of 2021; however, with club shut due to lockdown, the stock removed and with the availability of the builder the start of the build got brought forward to May 2020.
The works undertaken include easier access into the club via a new ramp, new toilets including a dedicated disabled toilet and the entrance hall has been freshened up to provide a warm welcome into the club for members and guests.
The Club Bar has been reconfigured to make a larger space. This incorporates booth seating and high tables with stools. An LED Video Wall has been installed along with another TV Screen which lets the club show BT Sport and different games at the same time on European nights. We would like to thank Sparq part of The Saville Group for the donation of the video wall.
A pool table has been added to the Club Bar, along with a quiz and fruit machine. The dart board has been relocated to the Club Bar to give the dart teams a better environment to play in.
LED lighting in the Club Bar enables different moods and modes for when the different activities are taking place, which can change the feel of the room when required.
Five snooker teams currently play out of the club; the extension has enabled an extra Snooker table to be added. The two Snooker tables can be used by members on non-match nights, with one available to pre-book in advance via the clubs website.
With the new improvements, the club have welcomed back three football teams who are using the club regularly. The football teams, who play on the pitch just outside the front door, had been refused entry to the club before 2015 - this marks a great turn around for the current committee and their drive to make WSSC a community hub for the benefit of the village.
We hold a weekly programme of events in the Main Hall while still opening the Club Bar.
